Dog Star Retires of the Day: Uggie, the charming canine star of The Artist, will be retiring from the film industry after this awards season.
“He’s at the stage where he just says, ‘I think I want to go and lay in the sun by the pool’,” trainer Sarah Clifford told The Hollywood Reporter.
The talented pooch does plan to make a final appearance at the Oscars and the Golden Collar Awards. He has been nominated for two Golden Collar Awards for his work in The Artist and Water for Elephants.
After that, 10-year-old Uggie will be stepping back from the long work days of feature films. He may continue to do small projects such as short films and TV commercials.
“We don’t force our dogs to do this,” said Clifford. ”And it always has to be fun for them. Uggie’s still enjoying it but he’s getting up there and he’s slowing down a little.”
As Uggie trades the big screen for more poolside lounging, his brother Dash is getting ready to make his come up in Hollywood.
