Twitter Faker of the Day: The Twitter allegedly operated by 80′s glam rocker Gary Glitter has been revealed to be a bogus account.
“Let me say that this account does not belong to convicted paedophile Gary Glitter,” wrote a man who referred to himself as “Ben” on a Tumblr called Glitter on Twitter. The posts are no longer available, but NME was able to pull some quotes before they disappeared.
“I set this twitter account up as a social experiment to highlight the dangers and safety of children using the social networking sites and to discover and question public morality,” wrote the man behind the fake account.
Unike Facebook, Twitter does not have a rule banning registered sex offenders. Twitter does not allow promotion or hosting of child pornography, but no specific rule keeps registered sex offenders from becoming a member of the social networking site.
British authorities told NME that police cannot restrict a person’s access to the internet because it would “violate their human rights.”
Glitter was convicted of possessing child pornography in 1999. Seven years later he was convicted of committing obscene acts with minors in Vietnam.
