Elizabeth Taylor Auction of the Day: A blockbuster from beyond the grave.
Elizabeth Taylor’s famed jewelry collection was auctioned off at Christie’s in NYC for a staggering $116 million.
The lot of 80 pieces was estimated to sell for $20 million, but ended up bringing in more than double the previous record for a single collection.
La Peregrina, a 16th century pearl, garnered $11.8 million and set the record for a gem sale. It was originally purchased at auction by Taylor’s ex-husband Richard Burton for a mere $37,000.
Other pieces sold included a 33.19 carat diamond ring (also given to her by ex-husband Burton), a diamond and sapphire ring (given to her by Michael Jackson), and a tiara (given to her as a gift by ex-husband Mike Todd). The items were all sold at several times their estimated price.
Christie’s Marc Porter remarked that it was “one of the most extraordinary sales” the house had held, and that it was a “testament to the love of Elizabeth Taylor worldwide.”
