No More Tanning of the Day: Disney teen stars suffered a massive blow yesterday after California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill prohibiting minors under the age of 18 from using ultraviolet tanning equipment.
California is the first state to ban the under 18 set from tanning beds. The bill was bundled with other legislation that, according to a statement from the Governor’s office, aimed to “improve the health and well-being of Californians.”
Before the bill, minors under 14 were banned from the cancer boxes tanning beds, but teenagers between 14 and 18 could tan as long as they had parental consent.
Sponsor of the bill, Senator Ted Lieu, said in a statement:
I praise Gov. Brown for his courage in taking this much-needed step to protect some of California’s most vulnerable residents — our kids — from what the “House of Medicine” has conclusively shown is lethally dangerous: ultraviolet-emitting radiation from tanning beds.
If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they’d be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29.
Stop crying kiddies, there’s still good old-fashioned beaches and spray tanning.
